The retired professor from the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (IPS), Bill Williams, was awarded a distinction in the 2020 edition of the Scientific Awards of the University of Lisbon/Caixa Geral de Depósitos.
The teacher, who taught at Escola Superior de Tecnologia do Barreiro for about two decades, saw his work recognized with an Honorable Mention in the category of Education Sciences, “an area in which he has been developing a fruitful and varied activity, especially focused on Engineering Education”, according to IPS.
These Scientific Awards, established by the University of Lisbon in collaboration with Caixa Geral de Depósitos, aim to recognize the activity of scientific research and encourage the practice of publication in international journals of recognized quality.
A graduate in chemistry from the National University of Ireland, he specialised in the area of Education, having developed work in different countries, including Portugal. He has also directed distance learning courses in several African countries, under the aegis of the International Labour Organization.
With a PhD in Engineering and Management from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) and integrated member of the respective Centre for Management Studies (CEG-IST), Bill Williams has produced knowledge in the areas of Engineering and Education Sciences, as a founding member of the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (SPEE).
Besides being a professor, he is also an associate editor of several publications of worldwide reference, including the European Journal of Engineering Education and the Journal of Engineering Education, having been the first researcher from Portuguese higher education to integrate the editorial board of this journal, edited by the American Society for Engineering Education.
