Hundreds of exemplary ideas!

Exarp is a movement that highlights exemplary initiatives for the integration of new students in higher education institutions. There are hundreds of ideas, many of them developed by the students themselves, which deserve to become public because of the consequences they have on people’s lives.

Exarp also encourages the creation of new initiatives focused mainly on the areas of sports, culture and science, through support in the communication and organization of events to the entities that wish so.

The moviment

Exarp is supported by the General Directory of Higher Education (DGES), in collaboration with Ciência Viva, but intends to extend to the whole society, from student associations and movements, through entities linked to sports, culture and science, to the participation of active citizens.

Everyone can participate with their ideas, proposals and actions and contribute to reinvent the integration of students in higher education institutions.

The symbol

All movements have a symbol. Ours, since we want everyone to participate, is a simple and accessible object: a scarf.

Any scarf, new or old, of one color or another and of any type of material, is perfect as an expression of support for this movement. However, we invited 10 artists to design the country and each one of them was responsible for creatively interpreting, in a scarf, a specific area. Curious?

AkaCorleone - Alentejo

Visual artist who started his career, in Lisbon, as a graffiti writer. From an early age obsessed with all the graphic and visual things, he ended up studying art and graduated in Design and Visual Communication. He worked as a graphic designer, but today he is focused only on his artistic practice. He is known for his use of strong colors, typography, characters, and other forms that he combines to achieve his usual original and humorous compositions. He has regularly exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions since 2010. The scarf dedicated to Alentejo was in the hands of AkaCorleone.

Amalteia - Madeira

Amalteia is the artistic name of the illustrator and designer Ana Melo. She studied design at UA and illustration at ESAD. Her work is mostly digital, but always starts on paper. She likes to draw plants, caricatured situations, strange people, create characters, tell stories and use color, lots of color. Amalteia created the scarf dedicated to Madeira.

Hugo Henriques - Algarve

He was born in Vila Franca de Xira in 1982, but spent his entire childhood in a tiny village in Beira Baixa, Chão do Galego. Until he finished his degree in Multimedia Design, he passed through Castelo Branco, Caldas da Rainha and Oporto. He has worked mostly as a graphic designer, but it is in the illustration that he finds himself more easily. At the moment, he puts all this and a few extras into practice at Associação Renovar a Mouraria, keeping active as a freelance designer and illustrator. Hugo Henriques is the illustrator of the scarf dedicated to the Algarve.

Lord Mantraste - Oporto

He was born in 1988 in Caldas da Rainha and attended the illustration course at ESAD where he ended up graduating in Graphic Design. He is a lover of nature and popular mysticism. He was one of the winners of the Sardines contest for the Lisbon Festival 2011 and was distinguished by Sábado Magazine as the author of the best illustration and design cover of 2015. He currently works as a graphic designer and illustrator for clients such as Casa da Música, NOS Discos, 20|20 Editora, EGEAC, Diário de Notícias, SÁBADO Magazine, among others. The scarf that compliments Oporto was in the hands of Lord Mantraste.

Margarida Esteves - North Interior

She began her adventure in drawing at an early age, but it was at university that she discovered the world of illustration. From then on she never wanted to stop and this is how she has mirrored her thoughts, ideas and images. She likes to experiment colors, materials and themes, and considers her work a union of these experiences. Complex images with some details are her favorite. Besides illustration, cinema and photography are her other great passions. The scarf dedicated to the North Interior was created by Margarida Esteves.

Maria Imaginário - Central Interior

This Portuguese visual artist and illustrator became well-known when, in 2005, she started painting ice creams and other colorful treats on vacant buildings in Lisbon. Since then, she has been developing a visual universe where she gives life to characters and emotional stories, covered with a pinch of candor, humor and irony. She works in different supports (?) and has presented her work in solo and group exhibitions since 2008. The Center Interior of Portugal was creatively interpreted on the scarf by Maria Imaginário.

Mariana Cáceres - Coastal Center

She was born in Lisbon in 1992, started drawing around 1996 and is old enough to know better. However, she still thinks she is going to dominate the world of illustration with her collection of pens and nibs even if only half of them work. When she is not being sarcastic she likes to write in the third person. The scarf of the Coastal Center was in the hands of illustrator Mariana Cáceres.

Nicolae Negura - Azores

Romanian artist who decided to make Lisbon his home and source of inspiration. His work is a combination of strong, bold colors with a wavy ink line that harkens back to vintage comics. He talks about life experiences, banal stories ripped from everyday life, dreams, and superheroes. Vintage comics are a major source of inspiration for his line. Nicolae created the drawing of the scarf dedicated to the Azores.

Tó Trips - Lisbon

Tó Trips was born in 1966. He is one of the guitar players in the portuguese band Dead Combo, but he is also a designer, where he signs as Mackintóxico. As a designer he did several jobs for the music industry, was responsible for the posters for the Galeria Zé dos Bois concerts for 10 years, made posters for Gulbenkian and CCB, set design for Xutos e Pontapés, and also worked for several years on the design of director Edgar Pêra's films. The scarf that compliments Lisbon was designed by Tó Trips.

Vanessa Teodoro - North Coast

Vanessa Teodoro is an illustrator and urban artist, with experience in advertising and graphic design. Her characters are born with influences from her everyday life, such as graffiti, tattoos, African patterns or comics. Her paintings have a strong and funny language, and always have something to say. She especially likes to draw female icons, full of color and with lots of detail and movement. The scarf dedicated to the North Coast was created by Vanessa Teodoro.

The iniciatives

Throughout the school year, you can consult in this agenda the activities of culture, sports and science that take place in higher education institutions and sometimes even outside them. These are moments scattered throughout the country, from the coast to the interior, from the north to the south, from the continent to the islands of Azores and Madeira.
